Slawomir G. (full name withheld under Polish law), from the city of Bydgoszcz in north central Poland, was serving a four-year prison term when in 2006, he took advantage of a period of temporary leave and fled the country.
How the fugitive obtained a passport and a visa to the United States remains a mystery.
Slawomir G. had been serving time for abduction, assault and extortion, including an instance of severely beating a man with a baseball bat who owed him money.
The fugitive was registered on the Interpol international list of wanted criminals, and the FBI was able to strike after Slawomir G. sought to legalise his stay in the US, via a marriage to an American citizen.
He was arrested by FBI officers near Chicago, and did not appeal against the deportation order. (nh)
