As many as 420 out of parliament’s 460 members voted for the agreement, with no abstentions and no votes against the motion.
At a press conference before the sitting of parliament, Friday, Speaker Radoslaw Sikorski said that last Sunday’s elections in Moldova were won by pro-European parties.
“We wish Moldova success in coming closer to the European Union,” Sikorski underlined.
Deputy Foreign Minister Tomasz Orlowski said during a Sejm committee hearing that Moldova had successfully undertaken reforms and needs an additional signal from the EU that “its future is the choice of a European path”.
Moldova signed the agreement with the EU on 27 June this year, paving the way for greater political and economic integration between the Eastern European country and the 28-nation bloc.
Chisinau ratified the deal at the beginning of July, which allowed for a temporary free-trade agreement (DCFTA) from 1 September, although all EU member states must still rubberstamp the association agreement proper. (jb)
