Ukraine hopes for Polish help in reforms and eventual membership of the European Union, President Petro Poroshenko said during a visit to Warsaw.

Fighting corruption, economic reform and eventual EU membership are the top priorities for the Ukrainian government, Poroshenko said in an interview for daily Gazeta Wyborcza.

The country is in dire need of financial help to accomplish any of these goals, Poroshenko said. The newspaper cites an unofficial estimate of USD 15 billion as the minimum additional aid that Ukraine needs immediately.

Poland is happy to help Ukraine, but expects the country to accelerate its reforms, Roman Kuzniar, an aide to Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski said. Poland is focusing in particular on aiding Ukraine in local-government reform and decentralisation, he added. (an)
