The European Union is likely to adopt the project of closer cooperation in energy policy, European Council President Donald Tusk said Thursday.

Tusk initiated the so-called of energy union after Russia’s invasion on Ukraine last year in his capacity as the then Polish prime minister
On Wednesday, the European Commission put forward a proposal for the energy union that falls short of mandating joint negotiations for natural-gas purchases from outside the EU, as Tusk originally proposed, but is otherwise fairly close to his ideas.
Tusk said he was “under the impression” that EU member states would approve the commission proposal, though negotiations on details would be tough. He dismissed Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s criticism of the proposal as “probably tougher sounding than [Orban] intended”.
He sees the energy union as a real step in the direction of winning energy independence for the EU. (an)
