In a case that has shocked France, the victim was abducted from a playground in the port town on Wednesday afternoon, in view of the girl's mother.

Speaking at a press conference, Prosecutor Jean-Pierre Valensi said that the 38-year old man had stopped to drink a beer by the park near the girl's house.

The girl apparently spayed the man with a water pistol and the suspect flew into a rage.

According to witnesses, Zbigniew H. (full name withheld under privacy laws) then bundled the girl into his car and drove off. Her naked body was found several hours later in a wooded area in the town.

It has also emerged that the suspect was extradited to Poland last year under the terms of a European Arrest Warrant.

French authorities have said they will make immediate inquiries about the man's movements over the last 12 months.

France's Justice Minister Christine Taubira has called for "complete, precise, rapid" investigation, after it was likewise revealed that Zbigniew. H had a series of convictions in France.

He frequently moved between Poland and France after 2000, before finally settling in France in 2009.

''What we owe the family is the entire truth,'' commented Prime Minister Manuel Valls. (nh)
