Scouts safe after storm prompts evacuation of Strasbourg camp

A group of Polish teenagers taking part in an international scouting jamboree is reported to be safe after a tornado-like storm rolled over Strasbourg, early on Saturday.

Some 10,000 French and 5,000 guest boy scouts and girl guides from all over Europe had to be evacuated after a violent storm passed through the area.

The teenagers, aged 14 to 17, are currently taking part in an international meeting under the slogan 'You’re up!,' the aim of which is building a stronger Europe and more united world through establishing direct and personal relationships.

Local emergency services reported that 35 of the young participants sustained minor injuries and that no one is is life-threatening situation.

Monika Kubacka, spokesperson for the Polish Scouting Union (ZHP) informed that she received news from commander of the Polish group Paulina Serocka assuring that all members of her team have been evacuated and are in good care.

The youngsters have already started clearing the debris and rebuilding their camp sites.

The 'You’re up!' scouting jamboree lasts from July 16th through 23rd. (ss/nh)
