Petru: let PM Kopacz attend Malta Summit

The head of the NowOczesnaPL party, Ryszard Petru, has appealed to President Andrzej Duda to allow outgoing Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz to attend the immigration summit on the island of Malta.

Ryszard Petru, head of the fourth largest party in the Sejm lower house of Polish parliament, wrote a letter to the President asking him to postpone the time of the first Sejm sitting on Thursday.
The issue of who would represent Poland at the informal summit in Valletta, Malta, on the topic of immigration, has been a bone of contention between the two major parties in Poland in recent days.
President Duda earmarked 12 November as the day of the first Sejm sitting, meaning that the Civic Platform (PO)-led coalition government would hand in its resignation and the President would appoint the new cabinet of the Law and Justice (PiS) party which won the 25 October general election.
Petru’s proposal would see PM Ewa Kopacz attending the summit on Thursday and returning to Poland for the swearing-in ceremony the same day.
“Such a change [...] would be the best way to solve the question of who should represent Poland at the informal European Council meeting,” the letter written by Petru said.
During a press conference on Monday to announce the names of the new PiS cabinet ministers, party leader Jarosław Kaczyński said that the indecision as to who would represent the country was merely a “contrived disagreement” by the outgoing government. (rg/di)
