Britain grows less attractive for Poles: report

Net immigration from Poland to Britain has fallen markedly, the Dziennik Gazeta Prawna daily has reported.

Citing Britain’s Office for National Statistics, the paper said that 32,000 Poles emigrated to Britain in 2014, while 18,000 returned to Poland.
Dziennik Gazeta Prawna said the net immigration figure, 14,000, was one of the lowest since Poland joined the EU in 2004. After that milestone event, waves of Poles headed off in search of a better life in richer EU countries.
Experts told the paper that the gap between the number of Poles heading abroad and those returning will probably shrink slowly. They added it is even possible that those coming back will outnumber those leaving.
Experts also told the daily that some Poles who were thinking of emigrating may be tempted to stay by the Polish government’s “500+” programme, which introduces new state benefits designed to encourage families to have more children and counteract a demographic crisis. (pk)
