Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann has said after meeting Polish President Andrzej Duda that he is open to the prospect of the two countries’ national banks holding talks amid fears in Poland over the strength of the Swiss franc.

Duda said: “I turned to the [Swiss] President with a request to, if possible, forge a closer relationship between the National Bank of Poland and the Swiss national bank so that, within the framework of that cooperation, the question of lines of credit be more open, questions of the possibility of cushioning the rate of the franc in case of turbulence on currency markets.”

He added that the high value of the Swiss franc was a problem for many Polish families, after hundreds of thousands of mortgages denominated in foreign currencies were taken out up until around 2010.

The Swiss national bank is an independent institution, but Schneider-Ammann said he was open to Duda’s idea.

A bill initiated by Duda to aid holders of mortgages in Swiss francs is currently before the Polish parliament. (vb/pk)
