Poland's Senate Chancellery said that an assessment of “the brutal suppression of social protests in Belarus” should be included in an opinion which is to be issued at the end of the session.

The chancellery added that the MPs from the three countries want an independent Belarus which respects human rights and civil liberties.

Meanwhile, the leader of the Ukrainian parliament, Andriy Parubiy, said he would like the MPs to take a position on the war in the Donbass region of Ukraine and the Russian threat.

Parubiy said the statement should stipulate that sanctions against Russia will not be suspended until Russian aggression subsides.

Polish Senate Speaker Stanisław Karczewski said that a joint position on those issues was important.

“Our common voice … has the chance to echo three times as strongly, not only within the executive bodies of our own countries, but also in [external] structures,” Karczewski said.

MPs will also discuss Ukrainian integration with the EU and NATO, development of trade and regional partnerships, and social and cultural issues on Tuesday.

Tuesday is the second day of a two-day meeting of ten delegates from each of the three parliaments. The trilateral parliamentary meetings have taken place annually since being initiated in 2005. (vb/pk)
