Poland, Spain want EU cohesion, unity

Polish and Spanish parliamentarians have said that they want European Union cohesion and unity and a greater role for national parliaments in the bloc’s decision-making process.

They also said they want tight transatlantic ties, as a two-day Polish-Spanish Parliamentary Forum came to a close in Kraków on Monday.
Members of the lower houses of both Poland’s and Spain’s parliaments also talked about Brexit, expressing hope that the European Union and the United Kingdom agree to guarantee the rights of citizens after Britain leaves the bloc and ensure close ties in the future.
They also said they were worried about conflict in Ukraine and called for the quick and full implementation of the Minsk ceasefire deals.
The heads of the Polish and Spanish parliaments said that “close partnership of both parliaments will serve to deepen bilateral relations, mutual friendship, better understanding and building common interests”.
They also hoped that closer ties between Poland and Spain will help “strengthen the stability and security of our continent”.
The Polish-Spanish Parliamentary Forum met for the fifth time, with previous fora in 2009, 2011, 2014 and 2015. The 2017 meeting coincided with the 40th year of renewed Polish-Spanish diplomatic ties. (vb/pk)
