Poland urges compromise between Catalonia and Spain

Poland’s foreign ministry said on Monday that Warsaw hopes the Spanish government and Catalan authorities will settle relations “without having to resort to the use of force and street protests.”

A day after Spanish police beat people trying to vote in an independence referendum in Catalonia, the Polish foreign ministry urged dialogue and compromise.
“Poland fully respects the principles of sovereignty, territorial integrity, and unity of the Kingdom of Spain,” the foreign ministry in Warsaw said in a statement on its website.
“We believe that solving the dispute between the government of the Kingdom of Spain and Catalonia, just like any disputes between the Kingdom of Spain and its autonomous regions, including separatist tendencies, is an internal affair of the Kingdom of Spain.”
The statement added: “We hope that the situation in Catalonia will stabilise quickly. Poland believes that the Spanish government and Catalan authorities will settle mutual relations in accordance with the constitution of the Kingdom of Spain and applicable laws, by way of dialogue and compromise, and in the spirit of understanding, without having to resort to the use of force and street protests.”
