Poland can always count on Hungary if it ever faces proceedings for sanctions by the European Union or other organisations, Hungary's foreign minister declared on Tuesday.

Speaking on public Polish Radio 24, Péter Szijjártó said his country “will always vote against any sanctions or penalties for Poland because we think it is double standards.”

Brussels is locked in a dispute with Poland over a number of issues, including the country’s refusal to accept migrants and judicial reforms.

"Poland can always count on Hungary in debates in the European Union and outside the EU," Szijjártó said.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban has said that his government would support Poland in a political battle against Brussels, which has threatened sanctions against Warsaw.

During a visit to Poland in late September, Orban called Brussels' treatment of Warsaw “a political inquisition” and said the European Union was not treating Poland with the respect it deserved.

European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans warned in July that the EU’s executive arm was close to triggering the bloc's Article 7 against Poland, which could ultimately result in sanctions, if a contentious bill aiming to overhaul the country's judicial system was passed.

Any sanctions against Poland would require unanimity among all other EU member states. (gs/pk)
