A woman told a court in the Danish town of Sonderborg that she had posted an announcement online, seeking someone who was short of money and prepared to give up a child for adoption, Poland’s IAR news agency reported.
Bargaining over baby
A pregnant Polish woman replied, demanding EUR 10,000. The Danish husband and wife said that was too much and bargained the Polish woman down to EUR 750.
The Danes bought the baby boy in 2014, according to the IAR agency.
The case came to light when Polish police alerted the Danish authorities. The boy is now three years old and is still being brought up by the Danish pair.
Prosecutors demanded that the couple should be punished for breaking adoption laws.
But the court in Sonderborg sentenced them only for providing false information when registering the child in Denmark.
They were on Wednesday given a 21-day suspended jail term and ordered to carry out 40 hours of community service.
