Ethiopian president comes to Warsaw for trade, security talks

Ethiopian President Mulatu Teshome is expected to visit Poland on Tuesday for trade and security talks with Polish President Andrzej Duda.

According to Krzysztof Szczerski, an aide to Duda, the presidents' meeting is part of Duda's strategy to partner with African nations. Duda sees Africa as an opportunity for Polish business and key to ensuring global security.
During the two-day visit, Teshome is also set to meet Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Senate Speaker Stanisław Karczewski.
Talks are to centre around the United Nations Security Council, on which both countries sit, and boosting Polish-Ethiopian trade.
Teshome is to visit a chemical plant because fertilisers could be of interest to Ethiopia, where agriculture makes up half of GDP, Szczerski said.
Duda visited Addis Ababa a year ago – the first time a Polish head of state had ever visited Subsaharan Safrica – saying that there was room for more trade between Poland and Ethiopia.
Teshome is the second president of an African country to visit Poland since Duda took office in 2015. Senegalese President Macky Sall visited Warsaw in late 2016. (vb/pk)
