According to Mateusz Morawiecki, who met his Macedonian counterpart Zoran Zaev in Warsaw on Thursday, “what Macedonia is doing … in terms of migration, in terms of refugees, is very important”.
He added that Poland had sent its own border guard officers to support Macedonian efforts to protect European borders.
Meanwhile, a European Union summit which starts on Thursday is expected to discuss stepping up border security and possible external processing centres for illegal migrants, including asylum seekers.
The Polish prime minister also discussed infrastructure links with Macedonia and the countries between them, which Morawiecki said would “connect northern Europe with the south, which will certainly boost trade exchange and investment in our region”.
Poland has initiated a so-called Three Seas Initiative to boost partnership among countries located between the Baltic, Black and Adriatic seas.
Morawiecki also pointed to Polish and Macedonian troops “working closely together” in Afghanistan, saying “we are already allies in very many fields”. (vb)
