Poland to focus on 'sovereign equality of states' at UN security council: president

The "sovereign equality of states" will be Poland’s priority during the second year of its term as a member of the United Nations Security Council, the country's president has said.

Polish President Andrzej Duda told world leaders gathered at the United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday that the sovereign equality of states was a fundamental principal outlined in the United Nations charter.
He also said that Poland was promoting a “rule-based global order,” adding: “Multilateralism and the rule-based global order are not just for the chosen ones. The same rules must apply to all and to the same extent."
“If we want to be advocates of multilateralism, we must bear that principle in mind … Not everyone who claims to be a proponent of multilateralism thinks of it in terms of equality of states. One can say that there is a negative multilateralism which boils down to the concert of powers, division into spheres of influence and the conviction that the fate of others can be decided without their participation,” Duda added.
He also said that "negative multilateralism" contributed to the breakdown of the global order.
Poland held the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council in May after joining the council for a two-year stint as a temporary member in January. (vb/pk)
