Polish party fourth-strongest in new EU parliament: report

Poland’s ruling conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party will have the fourth-largest representation in the new European Parliament, according to a newspaper.

The Gazeta Polska Codziennie newspaper has reported that Britain’s Brexit Party, led by Nigel Farage, and Germany’s CDU/CSU will hold the most seats, each with 29.
Italy’s right-wing League Party, led by Matteo Salvini, will be the third-most represented, with 28 MEPs in the new European Parliament, the Polish paper reported.
Poland's governing conservatives won 27 seats in European elections on Sunday, but one of their newly elected MEPs will not take his seat until Britain exits the European Union.
Gazeta Polska Codziennie speculated that the large contingent of Law and Justice EuroMPs could help boost Poland's role in European politics.
It quoted Polish conservative MEP Anna Fotyga as saying that Law and Justice’s landslide win in the EU vote means the Polish ruling party has a strong social mandate.
Poles chose a total of 52 Eurodeputies when they went to the ballot box on Sunday.
Sunday’s vote was a key test for Polish political parties ahead of national parliamentary elections this autumn.
