Polish president to brief NATO chief on plans for more US troops: aide

Polish President Andrzej Duda was on Tuesday afternoon scheduled to fly to Brussels to brief the NATO chief on the details of a planned deal for a stepped-up US military presence in Poland, an aide has said.

President Duda’s previously unscheduled visit to Brussels follows announcements by officials that Warsaw and Washington are on the cusp of reaching a deal on a strengthened American military presence in Poland.
Krzysztof Szczerski, chief of staff to the Polish president, told reporters on Monday that Duda would fill NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg in on “the state of negotiations on increasing the presence of US troops in Poland” during a meeting at NATO’s Brussels headquarters.
Szczerski said last week that the Polish-US deal could be announced when the two countries’ leaders meet at the White House on June 12.
Poland’s Duda will meet with US President Donald Trump in Washington on June 12 to discuss “the growing United States-Poland strategic partnership and a range of mutual interests, including defense, security, energy, and trade matters,” the White House press secretary said in a statement last month.
