The president of Germany, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, was also expected to take part in the meeting, which aimed to discuss the goals of the regional Three Seas Initiative after recent elections to the European Parliament, according to Krzysztof Szczerski, chief of staff to the Polish head of state.
Summit participants were also expected to discuss the future of European Union policies and the filling of top-level posts in EU institutions, Szczerski said on the eve of the event, as quoted by Poland's PAP news agency.
Poland and Croatia in 2015 launched a regional drive called the Three Seas Initiative to boost infrastructure, energy and economic cooperation as well as political ties among 12 European countries.
Poland’s government in October last year adopted legislation to establish a new state-run research institute focusing on this region of Europe.
The Three Seas Initiative brings together Poland, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Hungary.
Poland last year supported Germany’s bid to become a partner country of the Three Seas Initiative.
