A conference on mobility in education is being held in Sopot on the Baltic coast, as part of Poland’s presidency in the European Union.

Some 250 delegates from all EU countries are discussing mobility as a tool to acquire and develop competences from childhood to seniority. The focus is on the opportunities to study and train abroad, as well as on EU support through such programmes as Youth in Action and the Lifelong Learning Programme.

According to Education Minister Katarzyna Hall, support for mobility programmes is among the priorities of Poland’s EU presidency in the field of education.

Poland participates in the EU’s Lifelong Learning Programme, which consists of several components: Comenius, Erasmus, Grundtvig, Leonardo da Vinci and Study Visits.

In the 2009/10 academic year, over 11.500 Polish students benefitted from the Erasmus programme for study abroad. Even though the number of students covered by this and other foreign programmes has been steadily growing, Polish students are among the least mobile in Europe. (mk/pg)
