A film about a Polish rapper who took his own life has had the third best opening weekend of a home-grown movie over the past two decades.
You are God
Some 374,000 viewers in Poland flocked to catch You are God (Jestes Bogiem), giving the movie the finest opening weekend of any movie, international or Polish, this year.
Directed by Leszek Dawid, You Are God is based on the history of the legendary hip-hop group Paktofonika.
The outfit redefined the Polish music scene in the early 1990s, their hits becoming a rallying cry for a generation of Polish youth which witnessed the collapse of communism and the end of Soviet domination of Poland.
The fortunes of the group’s three members, Magik, Rahim and Fokus, are presented against the backdrop of the dreary coal-mining region of Silesia.
Magik, who has a turbulent relationship with his wife, ultimately takes his own life, an event which sends shockwaves through the nation.
Meanwhile, You Are God has also gone on limited release in Britain, where it is being shown in seven London cinemas, as well as in Birmingham, Glasgow, Dublin, Edinburgh, Southampton, Nottingham, Aberdeen, Bradford, Northampton, Cambridge, Bristol, Rugby, Bedford and Burton upon Trent. (mk/nh)
