Wałęsa biopic on Oscar campaign trail

Wałęsa. Man of Hope, Andrzej Wajda’s biopic about the Solidarity leader and former president, is having a series of screenings in the United States as part of a promotional campaign in the run-up to the 2014 US Academy Awards.
The film is Poland’s candidate for an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
The movie's special screenings this month are for journalists at the Hollywood Association of Foreign Press in Los Angeles.
On 2 December, the film will be shown at an event organized by the Los Angeles Times at the Laemmle NoHo Theater.
After the screening, Robert Więckiewicz, who portrays Wałęsa in the film, will be interviewed by the LA Times' film critic Mark Olsen.
On 5 December Wajda’s feature will open the 26th European Union Film Showcase organized by the American Film Institute in Washington.
The film has been promoted in the magazines The Hollywood Reporter and Variety.
Variety's film critic Jay Weissberg, has written that "as a lesson in how to make a traditional biopic about a living person without pandering or excessive white-washing [...] Wałęsa. Man of Hope is hard to beat".
The shortlist for Academy Awards nominations are to announced on 16 January.
In Poland, Wałęsa. Man of Hope has attracted an audience of close to one million since it went on general release on 4 October. (mk/pg)
