Dawid Podsiadlo triumphs at 'Polish Grammys'

Besides being voted Artist of the Year, the young star picked up a statuette for his debut album Comfort and Happiness as Album of the Year, which also won the prize for Debut of the Year.

His track “Triangles and Squares” (Trojkaty i Qwadraty) likewise won in the category for Best Song, although Podsiadlo admitted that he's run out of enthusiasm for the piece (video attached).

“I don't like this song now that I've sung it dozens of times,” he said.

Meanwhile, in the jazz category, Wlodek Pawlik was declared Artist of the Year. This followed the jazzman's triumph earlier this year, when he became the first Polish artist to win a Grammy for his album Night in Calisia.

In the classical section, opera singer Piotr Beczala was anointed Artist of the Year. Beczala is a regular face on the stages of the world's most celebrated opera houses.

There was also a posthumous Golden Fryderyk for late rock legend Marek Jackowski, a giant of Polish counter-culture in the 1980s.

The annual awards are voted for by about 1000 music industry insiders, members of the Polish Society of the Phonographic Industry (ZPAV). The awards take their name from Poland's most celebrated composer Frederyk Chopin. (nh)
