Filming under way on disco polo movie

The film, called simply Disco Polo, will follow the fortunes of a fictional group that emerged in the 1990s, the heyday of the bouncy pop genre that mixes Italo disco with the bawdier side of Polish folk music.

Director Maciej Bochniak has hired award-winning actors Dawid Ogrodnik (I want to Live, You are God) and Piotr Glowacki (Girl from the Wardrobe) to play the roles of two ambitious musicians from a small Polish town.

“The idea is to create a film that mixes genres, combining elements of the comedy, romance, thriller and road movie genres,” he said, as cited by the Polish Press Agency (PAP).

“It will be done with a light touch and a big dose of irony,” he noted, adding that the movie follows “the heart-warming story of a group of young people who follow their dreams for a better life.”

Several disco polo stars are taking part in the production, among them Radosław Liszewski (pictured above), frontman of the group Weekend.

Bochniak has already made a documentary about the genre, exploring the success of the band Bayer Full. The group ultimately won a colossal fanbase in China, releasing albums such as The Pole and the Chinese are one family (Polak i Chinczyk to jedna rodzina) under the moniker of Bai Fu.

Disco Polo is due for release in 2015, and filming is scheduled to close in Warsaw this October. (nh)
