Smarzowski's film, which is based on Jerzy Pilch's novel of the same name, focuses on the tribulations of a writer who is battling with his addiction.
“This is not a realistic film,” director Smarzowski told journalists at the festival.
“It is how the world is seen by an alcoholic.
“I wanted to show that the problem of alcoholism is a democratic one,” he added.
“It affects everyone in the same way, whether man or woman, young or old, rich or poor.”
Robert Wieckiewicz won international recognition for his role in Agnieszka Holland's Oscar-nominated Holocaust drama In Darkness (2011).
He won further acclaim for playing the title role in Andrzej Wajda's Walesa: Man of Hope (2013).
The 47-year-old can next be seen on the silver screen in Bory Lankosz's eagerly awaited thriller A Grain of Truth, which is due to go on general release in Poland in January 2015. (nh)
