The film, which was produced by the Warsaw Rising Museum and directed by Jan Komasa and Władysław Pasikowski, won the award at a ceremony on Sunday evening.

However, it was the sound editors and designers who picked up the award, including Bartosz Putkiewicz, Marcin Kasiński and Kacper Habisiak.

Warsaw Rising was cut from six hours of original material made by the Bureau of Information and Propaganda of Poland’s chief wartime underground force the Home Army (AK).

Besides colouring the black and white footage, producers employed lip readers to decipher dialogue.

Some 600,000 people have seen Warsaw Rising, with the film also being an official Polish entry to this year’s Oscars in the “Best Documentary Feature” category.

The film additionally opened the American Film Insitute’s European Union Film Showcase in Washington. (jb)
