The job is the key position in the Polish film world, with the public institute commanding considerable resources with which to back prospective movies.
“We met several people who had interesting outlooks on the tasks ahead for the Polish Film Institute,” commented head of the committee, film-maker Agnieszka Holland, in an interview with the Rzeczpospolita daily.
“But Mrs. Magdalena Sroka convinced us with her broad perspective on cinema,” she added.
The vote was unanimous.
Other members of the committee included film grandees such as Andrzej Wajda and Krzysztof Zanussi as well as rising star director Borys Lankosz.
As Deputy Mayor of Kraków, Sroka has been the city's most senior representative in cultural matters. She previously led the Kraków Festival Bureau.
Current head Agnieszka Odorowicz is due to stand down in October after completing two 5-year terms in the position.
The awaited approval of the new head by Minister of Culture Małgorzata Omilanowska is considered to be a mere formality. (nh)
