His body was found by his wife in their hotel room, on what was the last day of the 40th Gdynia Film Festival, in which Wrona's latest film 'Demon' had been competing in the main competition.

Prosecutor Małgorzata Goebel, head of the Regional Prosecutor's Office in Gdynia, said that the most likely version of death is suicide, without the involvement of a third party.”

She noted that “the death was sudden in nature and most likely caused by hanging, as evidenced by the injury revealed during the examination.

Goebel added that no other injuries were found on the body of the deceased.

The 42-year-old director was considered as one of the most promising talents of his generation in the Polish film industry.

'Demon', his third full-length feature, was an unconventional exploration of issues relating to the Holocaust in which a Jewish spirit (dybbuk) returns to haunt the living.

It was one of 18 films competing in the main competition of the festival. The annual event provides the key showcase of new Polish movies.

Further tests will clarify whether the director had been under the influence of alcohol, drugs or other intoxicants at the time of his death.

His sudden demise left the Polish film industry in shock, casting a long shadow over the closing day of the festival. (nh/rk)
