'Demon' won the Best Picture award in the Horror Features category.

Wrona's film, which goes on general release in Poland on 16 October, is a genre-blending concoction that mixes comedy and horror with elements of family drama.

A Polish-Israeli coproduction, the film provides an unconventional exploration of the impact of the Holocaust on contemporary Poland.

'Demon' follows the emergence of a 'dybbuk', a Jewish spirit, which possesses the groom at a rural wedding.

It was a very risky mixture of different genres,” Wrona told Radio Poland at the Gdynia Film Festival last month.

But I just like playing with the audience's expectations,” he said.

Austin's Fantastic Fest specialises in horror, fantasy and sci-fi movies. Guests in recent years have included Tim Burton, Winona Ryder, Darren Aronofsky, Elijah Wood and Bill Murray.

Poland's film industry was left in shock after Marcin Wrona died suddenly on the last day of the Gdynia Film Festival. The initial findings of an autopsy carried out on 21 September suggest that he took his own life. (nh/rk)
