Polish police catch fewer drink-drivers

Last year, 128,600 drink-drivers were stopped, some 12,600 fewer than in 2014, Rzeczpospolita reported, citing police statistics.

Meanwhile, patrols stopped 17.7 million drivers for breath tests, 2.3 million more than in 2014.

“Currently, we carry out almost ten times more breath tests than in 2008, for example,” Rzeczpospolita quoted Inspector Marek Konkolewski of Polish Police Headquarters as saying.

In 2006 police stopped a record 200,000 drivers who had been drinking.

Drink-driving has been a scourge in Poland, where alcohol traditionally plays a major role in family get-togethers at Christmas and other holidays. (pk)
