Polish rapper-turned-MP opens office

Liroy-Marzec, who won his seat under the umbrella of the Kukiz'15 party, led by veteran rock star Paweł Kuliz, is preparing draft legislation that will compel Polish radio stations to play more tracks in the Polish language.

At present, nationwide broadcasters must fill 33 percent of their musical output with songs that have Polish lyrics.
Liroy Marzec wants this level to be raised to 50 percent.
The erstwhile rapper has not revealed yet whether the legislation would also embrace regional stations.
However, the proposals have met with criticism from some quarters.
“The idea of increasing the proportion of Polish lyrics could prompt some listeners, particularly young ones, to turn to increasingly popular streaming services from abroad,” commented Joanna Sołtysiak, musical director of Radio Zet.
She noted that digital music services such as Spotify and Deezer are not obliged to fulfil similar obligations.
Liroy-Marzec rose to fame with abums including 'East on da Mic' (1992) and 'Alboom' (1995), the latter shifting more copies than any other album in Polish hip hop.
Kukiz '15, currently the third largest party in the lower house of parliament (Sejm), includes MPs from various quarters, many of them right-wing. (nh/pk)
