Black comedy 'Body' triumphs at 'Polish Oscars'

Małgorzata Szumowska's movie 'Body' won the top gongs on Monday evening at the Polish Film Awards, which are voted through annually by members of the Polish Film Academy.

'Body' took the awards for best film and best director, while stars of the movie Janusz Gajos and Maja Ostaszewska likewise won the prizes for best leading actor and best leading actress respectively.
Director Szumowska's film is an exploration of loss and reconciliation laced with black humour, set in contemporary Warsaw.
It has already garnered a slew of awards including the Silver Lion at the Berlin Film Festival last year.
The 'Discovery of the Year' award went to Agnieszka Smoczyńska for debut movie 'The Lure', a film that is also picking up prizes on the international circuit.
Meanwhile, Janusz Majewski's bittersweet comedy 'The Eccentrics: On the Sunny Side of the Street' won four awards, including for best supporting actor (Wojciech Pszoniak), best supporting actress (Anna Dymna), best music and best sound.
The prize for best screenplay went to Kinga Dębska for 'These daughters of Mine'.
Last week, actor Janusz Gajos had also been presented with the event's annual lifetime achievement award.
The awards, also known as 'The Eagles', have been voted for by members of the Polish Film Academy and they have been given out since 1999. (nh)
