Polish Senate looks ahead to Battle of Warsaw centenary in 2020

The Senate has adopted a resolution of support to civic initiatives to commemorate the forthcoming 100th anniversary of the victory of Polish troops over Soviet Russia in August 1920.

The resolution, which was passed with 76 votes for and three abstentions, speaks of the senators’ particular support for the idea of erecting a monument commemorating the Battle of Warsaw.
The Senate calls on the Warsaw city authorities to make a realization of this ‘historic and patriotic undertaking’ possible.
Senator Jan Maria Jackowski of the governing Law and Justice (PiS) party described the battle as an unprecedented success of Polish troops, recalling that it was named [by the British politician and diplomat, Lord Edgar D'Abernon] one of the most important battles ever fought in the history of mankind.
The Battle of Warsaw in the Polish-Soviet war came two years after Poland regained its independence following over 120 years of foreign rule. Historians agree that if the Bolsheviks had reached Germany, the history of Europe and the world could have taken a different course. The Polish victory thwarted Bolshevik plans to export the revolution to the West. (mk/rg)
