Poles shortlisted for opera 'Oscars'

A Polish tenor and the National Opera have been shortlisted for International Opera Awards, which are considered the Oscars of the Opera.

The Polish National Opera's production of Władysław Żeleński’s “Goplana” is a finalist in the “rediscovered work” category”.
“Goplana” has been billed as an “unfamiliar jewel … with a fairy tale plot, an opera run through with Polish motifs and touching lyricism”.
Premiered in Warsaw in autumn, 2016, it is available free until 2 May on www.theoperaplatform.eu.
Władysław Żeleński (1837-1924) was a leading Polish composer at the turn of the 20th century. As an opera composer he remains somewhat in the shadow of Stanisław Moniuszko.
Meanwhile, Polish tenor Piotr Beczała has been nominated for a readers award.
Founded in 2012, the International Opera Awards is an annual celebration of excellence in opera around the world. An international jury is chaired by the editor of Opera Magazine.
The winner of the Opera Magazine reader's award will be selected in an on-line vote by opera lovers.
The awards will be presented at a ceremony at the London Coliseum on 7 May. (mk/vb)
