It has attracted almost 70 young singers from 17 countries, including China, Kazakhstan and Swaziland.
A prizewinners’ concert will be held on 20 May in the nearby Stary Sącz, where Ada Sari spent her childhood.
Founded in 1885, the Ada Sari Vocal Competition is held every two years. This year’s 17th edition of the event can be followed as live streaming on www.adasari.pl.
Ada Sari (born Jadwiga Szayer) studied music in Kraków, Vienna and Milan. After making her professional debut in Rome in 1909, she developed a spectacular career which included performances in some of the most prestigious venues in Europe, the United States and South America.
She returned to Poland in 1934 and sang at the Grand Opera in Warsaw.
During the Second World War, she directed an underground opera studio in Warsaw and started teaching. After the war she continued to perform in operas and on the concert stage for two years, after which she devoted herself exclusively to teaching. (mk/rg)
