The Heritage exhibition, one of the largest shows of Polish museum pieces in the country’s history, has drawn nearly 10,000 people since it opened last month, the National Museum in Kraków has said.

Some 650 items are on show at the museum, the oldest one, a coin, dates back to the time of Poland’s first monarch, King Bolesław I, who was Duke of Poland from 992 until he was crowned in April 1025. He died two months after his coronation. The coin is the earliest known record of the use of the name “Poland”.

“We have noticed that the exhibition is especially appealing to the Polish diaspora, people with Polish roots who long for Poland,” said Mateusz Chramiec, one of the art historians who guides tours in the museum.

The exhibition, which spans three floors of the museum's main building, has been divided into “geography”, “language”, “people” and “customs” sections and features historic maps, books, paintings and clothing.

The exhibition will remain open until 7 January. (vb/pk)
