The plaque is placed on the house at 26 Wojska Polskiego St., where Wajda was born on March 6, 1926 and where he lived for eight years.
Jakub Wajda, the director’s father, served as an officer in an anti-tank artillery regiment in Suwałki and the house was part of army barracks at the time.
The unveiling ceremony was attended by Wajda’s widow, Krystyna Zachwatowicz, who said that Suwałki, where her husband spent his childhood, remained close to his heart all his life.
Wajda paid his last visit to the town in June 2016, three months before his death on October 9. At the time, he visited the apartment where he was born.
Wajda was an honorary citizen of Suwałki and represented the local constituency during his term as a member of the Senate, the upper house of Poland’s parliament, from 1989 to 1991. (mk/gs)
