The 40-year-old police officer was shot and killed when a bank robber opened fire from an automatic rifle after being caught red-handed trying to break into a cash machine this past weekend. The police officer had served in the force for 14 years.

The fundraiser, which the public broadcaster is launching in response to an appeal by the police force, is a “sign of the great respect that the Polish Radio community has in its mission as a public broadcaster for the heroism of a public law enforcement official who gave his own life while protecting the lives and security of his fellow citizens,” Polish Radio said in a statement.

Prime Minister Beata Szydło has announced that the officer's widow and two children, aged eight and 12, would receive "special state benefits."

As part of efforts to help the dead policeman’s family, Polish Radio plans to hold an auction of a variety of items donated by its employees and journalists.

The auction will be carried out by Polish Radio channels—Polish Radio 1, 2, 3 and 4 and PR24—on Thursday, December 14.

Polish Radio wants to encourage all listeners to join the fundraiser to support the family of the shot policeman.
