The crowd kept vigil at Piłsudski Square in central Warsaw, listening to recordings of the pope's sermons.
The square, lit up with an animated image of the pope and one of his most famous quotes, "Do not be afraid", was once the site of John Paul II's meetings with Varsovians during his pilgrimages to Poland.
John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, at the age of 84.
He served more than 26 years as the head of the Roman Catholic Church, making his pontificate the third-longest in history. He was declared a saint in 2014.
John Paul II was a strong supporter of Poland's anti-communist Solidarity movement. He is recognised as helping to end communist rule in Poland. (vb/gs)
