Polish students performed well in leaving exams

Nearly 80-percent of this year’s high-school-leavers passed their “Matura” finishing exams, the results of which were released on Tuesday.

About 15 percent of students failed just one subject and will be eligible for a re-test in August, while about five percent of students failed two or more exams and will have to wait a year to re-sit the tests.
Eighty-five percent of high-school students passed their exams, faring better than their peers at vocational schools.
Deputy Education Minister Maciej Kopeć attributed this to a greater emphasis on mathematics in school curricula.
Eighty-three percent of students passed their compulsory mathematics exam, while 97 percent passed Polish.
Of students who took English, the most popular elective subject, 96 percent passed.
Nearly 250,000 students took exams in May this year. (vb)
