Jewish culture festival opens in Warsaw

The 15th "Singer's Warsaw" Jewish Culture Festival gets under way in the Polish capital on Saturday.

The annual event, which takes its name from Nobel Prize-winning Polish-Jewish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer, sees a more than weeklong feast of music concerts, film screenings, exhibitions, culinary workshops and more.
Among the highlights of the festival this year is a tribute to World War II Warsaw Ghetto poet Władysław Szlengel and a concert by Israeli rock band El Hameshorer, Poland’s PAP news agency has reported.
Other musicians due to perform include Israeli singer-songwriter David Broza and veteran Polish singer Sława Przybylska.
Gołda Tencer, the founder and artistic director of the festival, says the event is “a bridge connecting tradition and modernity” and “a tribute to the exceptional heritage and openness to novelties, freshness and experiments.”
The festival is held in various venues around the Polish capital every year, but primarily in a part of the city that was once the hub of Warsaw's Jewish community.
This year's event runs until September 2.
