More pilgrims flocking to Jasna Góra

More than 123,000 people made the pilgrimage to the Jasna Góra shrine in Poland’s south during this year's “pilgrimage season”, up by 2,500 compared to 2017, according to monks from the shrine.

The largest single pilgrimage, originating in Tarnów, in Poland's south, counted 7,000 participants.
Pilgrims arrived primarily on foot but many cycled, ran and even skated to the shrine in the city of Chęstochowa.
Jasna Góra is the main destination for Roman Catholic pilgrims in Poland. It houses the famous Black Madonna of Częstochowa icon. Pilgrimages to the site date back to the 15th century.
The bulk of pilgrimages take part from April 29 to August 25.
According to pollster CBOS, 32 percent of all Poles have been to Jasna Góra at least once. (vb)
