It is the 11th edition of the festival, organised by the Polish Institute in Paris, and will end on November 18.

The event will also feature films directed by men, most of whom are new to filmmaking and otherwise would be unlikely to have their work screened in France.

The festival was launched with a showing of Birds Are Singing in Kigali, an award-winning movie by Joanna Kos-Krauze and her late husband Krzysztof Krauze about a Polish ornithologist who rescues a Rwandan girl from genocide.

Poland granted women the right to vote on November 28, 1918, after it declared independence following more than 123 years of partitions and foreign rule.

The first women were elected to the Polish parliament, the Sejm, in 1919. (vb/pk)
