Piotr Gliński, who also serves as a deputy prime minister, told a news conference on Thursday that the government would spend an extra PLN 20 million (EUR 4.7 million, USD 5.2 million) on public libraries across the country under its National Readership Development Programme.

Total spending on the construction, renovation, expansion, refurbishment and equipment of public libraries this year and next will come to PLN 40 million annually, Gliński said.

More than six in 10 Poles did not read a single book last year, according to a study published this week.
