Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Estonia and Portugal offer the most family-friendly policies among 31 high- and middle-income countries with available data across the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development and the European Union, according to a United Nations report released on Thursday.
Meanwhile, Switzerland, Greece, Cyprus, the United Kingdom and Ireland rank the lowest, the report by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) found.
It used 2016 data from the OECD and the EU’s Eurostat statistics agency to rank countries according to criteria including the duration of parental leave at full pay equivalent and childcare services for children aged up to six.
Poland's president last month signed into law a plan by the country’s governing conservatives to offer benefits to all families with children.
Poland spends 2.7 percent of its GDP on state benefits for families and children—one of the highest figures in the 28-nation European Union, according to a newspaper.
