Germans want Greece out of euro?

As many as 69 percent of Germans were favour of Greece’s departure from the common currency, while 17 percent of those polled stated that the financially troubled country should stay in the eurozone.

The YouGov poll also shows that if a referendum were to be held in Germany on its membership of the EU, 52 percent of Germans would vote for, while 30 percent would vote for leaving the 27-nation bloc.

Additionally, 21 percent of those polled stated that the euro currency will collapse within the next ten years and that EU countries will return to their old currencies.

Barroso demands tighter grip on finances?

Meanwhile, the European Parliament and Commission have criticised the European Council for being sluggish in its decision making to combat the ongoing financial woes of the Union.

Speaking at a European Parliament plenary session debate on the forthcoming EU budget on Wednesday, head of the EC Jose Manuel Barroso called upon the Council to take concrete decisions at the next European Council meeting at the end of June.

Barroso added that the only way for Europe to climb out of the economic crisis is to deepen the bloc’s fiscal and banking unions, which, according to the EC head, would allow for greater collective management of the EU’s economy as a whole. (jb)
