‘There will be no recession in Poland,' says former PM

Jan Krzysztof Bielecki says that though next year will be worse than 2012, he is “optimistic” as to Poland’s economic prospects going forward.
Bielecki, a top economic advisor to Prime Minister Donald Tusk and once prime minister of Poland in 1991, has told the Polityka magazine: “The future for Poland is rather optimistic”.
“There is no recession scenario,” he added, after data over the summer has indicated a slowdown in the Polish economy, which, up until now, has been one of Europe’s success stories as the eurozone goes back into recession.
Earlier this month, Poland’s finance minister Jacek Rostowski admitted that his target of lowering Poland’s deficit to under 3 percent of GDP was now unrealistic as the economy slows.
Rostowski said that 3.5 percent by years end was now a more realistic target, while predicting growth for next year 2.2 percent.
“ 2014 will be better than 2013,” thinks Bialecki.
“I am optimistic for the medium term, he said, adding that he was also positive that Poland would maintain crucial investments from the European Union in the as yet undecided 2014 to 2020 budget.(pg)
