Greenpeace in anti-coal mining protest

In their latest media stunt, Greenpeace hung a banner on the Economy Ministry building in Warsaw, Wednesday morning, saying “coal mines – the economy’s black hole”.

The environmental activists are opposing plans to open two new collieries in Gubin and Legnica, south western Poland, to mine an estimated 2.5 billion tonnes of coal, which would allow the construction of power plants with capacity of nearly 8,000 megawatts
Greenpeace claims, however, that opening coal mines would cost up to 10 billion zloty (two and a half billion euros) in social and environment al costs. (pg)
