About 5.7 million Poles are being brought into the digital fold, bringing the overall number of viewers to over 10 million, out of a population of 38.5 million.
The programme is being carried out under the auspices of the Ministry of Administration and Digitisation, and in 2013 alone, 24.7 million zloty (5.9 million zloty) are being allocated for the switch over.
Analogue transmitters were turned off – and their digital successors switched on - in eight regions across Poland, taking in cities such as Warsaw, Szczecin, Rzeszow and Elbag, and 346 municipalities in total.
The majority of households were expected to receive digital signals by 5am this morning, although some areas, such as in the vicinity of Sanok, south east Poland, may experience delays of up to forty hours.
Polish public broadcaster Telewizja Polska (TVP) is providing viewers with access to 19 free digital channels. (nh)
